Recap of the BCA Luncheon

What a Day — Recap of the BCA Luncheon

We want to thank everyone who joined us at the Beach Crew Alumni (BCA) luncheon, held alongside Beach Crew’s big win at the Pancake Regatta. It was a truly special day, celebrating our shared history, connecting alumni across generations, and reminding us why we are all part of the Beach Crew family.

Celebrating Success

Our Beach Crew teams fared well at the Pancake Regatta set the tone for an unforgettable day. Alumni from the 1960s through the 2020s came together, showing the depth and strength of the Beach Crew legacy. Thanks to everyone’s generosity, we raised almost $3,500 for the BCA to support current athletes, equipment, and future alumni events. More importantly, we reconnected with our Beach Crew family…both old and new.

Alumni Race

Despite a cold, rainy morning, the Beach Crew Alumni Race brought out an energized and determined group of former rowers. The day kicked off with the women’s alumni crew lining up against the current team, followed by an equally spirited men’s matchup. Both 350-meter races were full of grit, big smiles, and plenty of splashing as alumni returned to the dock soaked but laughing, proud to reconnect with teammates and keep the tradition alive.

Choir Face-Off: Novice Crew Edition

The two novice crews…or “New Kids On The Dock”, The Rowing Queens and Beach Crew Choir competed with impressive vocals and choreography. While both teams delivered strong performances, the Rowing Queens earned the top spot with their outstanding showmanship. This may be a new Beach Crew tradition.

Alumni Stories: Sharing the Legacy

Alumni shared memories, wisdom, and humor from their time on the water:

  • Gary Barton entertained with tales of racing speed boats just to make it to the course.

  • Elizabeth Bolla recounted some unconventional and hilarious training methods under coach and alum Scott Charette.

  • Mark Brady, now called “The Streak,” shared adventurous stories from his crew’s bridge jumps.

  • Heidi Hook reflected on her crew, The Ladies of the 1980s, and expressed lasting appreciation for Coach Kelly Hurley.

Taco Beach Showdown

Rowan DuPras, son of Beach Crew alum Kevin DuPras, emerged victorious in the Taco Beach taco-eating contest, outpacing all challengers. While some expected coaches Scott Erwin, Kelly Hurley, or Riley Hobbs to win, Rowan ran away with the crown.

This event would not have been possible without the support of key partners:

  • LBRA for agreeing to let Beach Crew use the room for the lunch and providing referees and support for the regatta.

  • The Lion’s Club for providing breakfast to all athletes and alumni.

  • The many volunteers who spent many hours on water and land helping to make it a special day.

  • Kelly Hurley, Scott Erwin, John O’Donnell, Mike Long and the BCA planning team for their hard work.

  • Kevan and Ginger Vance and the Taco Beach team for the excellent food spread.
