Women’s Crew Scrimmage with USC and SDSU
By Marissa Long
Long Beach State’s Women’s Crew hosted multiple scrimmage races with San Diego State University and the University of Southern California this past weekend. All teams participated in practice races up and down the Marine Stadium, even through the constant rainfall.
The first boats to compete were eights in a fifteen-hundred-meter course. Our Women’s Crew joined forces with one rower and one coxswain from USC to make an eight. SDSU and our mixed crew boat scrimmaged a total of two times from the Yacht Club to the Marine Stadium and back. The LBSU and USC mixed boats won both races. Novice rower, Maria Martel stated, “The boat felt great during the scrimmage, my teammates, the rowers from USC and I were excited! Although we faced unexpected weather conditions, we beat San Diego State.”
After the eights races, LBSU and USC took out a four together to dual race with SDSU in a thousand-meter course. We had two of our own rowers and coxswain and two USC rowers in the four. The fours ran the course twice and our joined boat with USC won both races again. Overall, the scrimmage was a great experience for the Women’s Crew and will be useful in preparing them for their next race at San Diego Crew Classic.
