Men's WIRA 2025
The Beach Crew competed last week at this year's Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championships at Sacramento, California from April 26 to 27. The men's crew had a chance to show what they were made of after months of hard work in the water, in a series of 2,000-meter heat races.
The Varsity Four were first up in their heat race on the regatta. In the last moments of the race, the boys rowed hard as they go head to head with UC Santa Barbara.
Coming into the finish line, they couldn't beat Santa Barbra, but were able to get second place in the race and qualify for grand finals in the regatta. The Beach Crew's official time in the race was 6:55.689.
Next up was the Men's sweeping pair race. The pair consisted of Rowan Dupras at Port and Jacob Hunter at Starboard. As the race got started, the pair kept their pace at fourth place, while keeping themselves on point. Overall, the pair gave it their all and placed fourth in the race with their official time of 7:41.375, qualifying for the petite final of the regatta.
Then there was the Men's double race with the Novice crew racing other Varsity crews in the race, especially holding their own in top three of the race. This pair had a clean start in the race and at the final 500 of the race, kept their technique solid without tiring themselves out.
In the end, the boys finished the race at fourth place with a time of 8:05.959, qualifying for the petite final. Everyone in the Beach Crew were very proud of these boys and their efforts in this race; a true milestone in their rowing career.
With enough rest throughout the afternoon, Dupras and Hunter head forth into their men's sweeping pair petite finals in the regatta. The pair have done a great job at maintaining their position at second place against California Lightweights (UCB), even during the last 500 meters of the race. With great effort, the pair finished in third place with a time of 8:02.11.
Then the Novices came in finish off their petite finals in their last doubles race in the regatta. In the first 500 of the race, the boys kept a good pace with CPSLO, maintaining a first place pace.
The Novices tried increasing their stroke rate to see if they could catch up with CPSLO in the last 500 of the race. Despite that, their efforts did not go in vein as they finish the race in second place with a time of 8:12. 886.
On Sunday, April 27, The Beach Crew's Varsity Four finish off the regatta as they go into grand finals. The crew, in the end, placed fourth in the finals with a time of 6:57.338.
The Beach Crew had some tight and impressive races that weekend. The crew will be competing in their final regatta of the season at Oak Ridge, Tennessee, for the American Collegiate Rowing Association (ACRA) Championships from May 16 to 18.
