Men’s Crew Pancake Regatta 2023
By: Marissa Long
Beach Crew Alumni and Long Beach State University’s Crew hosted this year’s Pancake Regatta. Orange Coast College, University of California Irvine, University of California Los Angeles, San Diego State University, and California Polytechnic State University San Luis Obispo’s crews came out to compete with Beach Crew for the Queen Mary Trophy.
The varsity crews competed in a head race around Naples Island. The race was more than 4,300 meters. Our Men’s Varsity’s time around the island was 15 minutes and 44 seconds, which was 1 minute faster than their last practice. They finished in eighth place, 6 seconds behind UCI’s B boat. UCLA’s A boat won the head race with a time of 14 minutes and 3 seconds.
Our Men’s Novice Crew participated in race sprints up and down the Long Beach Marina. To help other crews get race experience in an eight, our novice crew rowed with athletes from CPSLO. Their crew did not have enough rowers for an eight, so we let them hop in our Novice Men’s boat.
Around 340 athletes participated in this year’s Pancake Regatta. OCC won the Queen Mary Trophy after all the races and points were tallied. This year’s regatta was a success, with many of the crews reaching out to thank us for our hard work and to say that they will be returning next year.
