Novice Crew Update

The Men’s and Women’s novice crews have been training in an eight-together. The varsity and novice crews will work out together at the beginning of practice on land. When it is time to get on the water, the crews separate.

Our novice crew has been working on technique with Coach John O’Donnell.

They focused on setting the boat at the finish (end of the stroke) and steady-state rowing with an emphasis on catch (beginning of the stroke) timing.

A couple of crabs were caught by these beginning rowers. A crab is when a rower gets their oar stuck in the water while the boat is still moving, and it can occasionally result in ejection from the boat. The novices recovered quickly from the crabs, while staying relatively dry and were able to continue rowing.

By the end of practice, their rowing had improved, and they gained a lot more confidence in the boat.
