The Men’s Crew Head Coach, Scott Erwin first started rowing in 1983. He was a student at San Diego State University when their crew team was recruiting on campus with a big eight racing shell in the middle of the quad. He found his passion for rowing there and stated, “I loved practice, it was like Christmas morning, I couldn’t wait for them.” He won the Western Sprints Championships in his novice eight at SDSU in 1983 and won it again in a varsity four in 1986. That same year, he was selected for Pre-Elites and went on to make the Pan-American team in 1987. He won a silver medal at the Pan American Games. From 1988-92 he was part of a selection camp for the national team and had many wins. He has been coaching the Men’s Crew with experience in competition, technique, and discipline.
Coach Scott has been a part of Beach Crew since 1987 after rowing at Long Beach for one year. He was away for a long time until 2020 when he started assistant coaching for the Men’s Crew. He stated that his goals for 2023 are, “To help each athlete meet and exceed their goals and expectations they have for joining the team. Show them through commitment and hard work that they can push their bodies beyond their limitation. Start building the foundation of a program that competes at a level where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.”
