Coaching Award
By Marissa Long
Assistant Coach, Mike McAndrews recently received a coaching award from the United States Marine Corps at a base in Quantico, Virginia. He was nominated by two previous Long Beach Men’s Crew rowers Thomas Poole and Matthew Boatner. The leadership coaching workshop took place over five days and McAndrews got to join a classroom where they discussed how the Marine Corps teaches leadership, experience the obstacle course, fly in a military helicopter, witness the Marine Corps Band perform, and visit the Marine Corps Museum in Washington, D.C. Poole and Boatner are currently training to be pilots.
Next race season, Coach McAndrews will be the Head Coach for the Women’s team. He attended the Men’s Crew graduation ceremony and gave advice to the graduating class of 2023 stating, “Follow your dreams and don’t give up. If you persevere things will work out. When one door closes, another door opens.”
