Men’s Varsity Double Prepares for Championships

By Marissa Long

As novices, Ron Reyes-DiTraglia and Mike Cervantes placed 5th overall, during last year’s Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships (WIRA).

The California State University Long Beach Men’s Crew also had a varsity double win in the finals at WIRA last year.

Ron and Mike’s goal is to defend that championship title. They both got back into a double after rowing most of the season in sweep boats.

During practice, they have been working on technique and speed. For technique, they have been using drills that were recommended to them by a US National rowing team member.

The main drill they put into practice was called deuces. Ron enjoyed the deuces drill stating, “That one was fun because it forced us to be mindful of each part of our drive while a lot of other drills tend to make you more mindful of recovery to catch.”

Ron and Mike are getting back into the swing of rowing a double and will be on their way to championships at the end of the month.
