Recreation Center Workout

With the current winter storm blowing through Southern California and the boathouse temporarily losing power, the Men’s Crew has been working out on campus at the Student Recreation and Wellness Center. Varsity rower and exercise physiology master’s student, Mike Cervantes has been leading the Men’s Crew workouts with the assistance of novice rowers who have strength and conditioning backgrounds. The team has been separated into lightweights and heavyweights to account for the varying degree of strength and ability. To warm up the team has used dynamic stretches, Indian runs, and playing basketball to help loosen up their joints. Their main focus has been on building strength with weight training and conditioning. Mike stated that the training, “consisted of various barbell movements and cable machines that utilized gross motor skills. These movements translate directly into rowing.” Rain or shine, the Men’s Crew is constantly training to prepare for the upcoming spring race season.
