LONG BEACH, CA
The Beach Crew Selection Panel of CSULB Club Sports & Recreation Department welcomes back Jonathan Flietstra for the first time since his graduation in 2010. Jon was selected to take over for Jeffrey Vreeland, who resigned in the summer to take the Assistant Coach position under Head Coach Scott Charette at UCLA. We want to thank Jeff for three great years as the Novice Coach and wish him the best of luck at UCLA. The Beach can expect some stiff competition from them in the near future.
Having rowed under Head Coach Scott Strong, Jenna Larson, and Sam Proctor, Jon started as a novice athlete in 2005, serving as Team Captain for two years in 2008 & 2009, and taking home the Gold medal in the Men’s Collegiate Pair 2+ at the 2007 Western Intercollegiate Rowing Championships (WIRA) with alum Kent Redell (’09). Jon is a graduate of CSULB, with a degree in Kinesiology and an emphasis in Sports Psychology and Coaching.
“CSULB expanded my knowledge of not only tools necessary for success in coaching athletes, but also coaching others along in life. By being involved in many activities during college, such as crew, I was able to develop strong relationships with many members in the CSULB community, including former President F. King Alexander who I frequently played recreational basketball alongside. I believe coaching is more than pushing athletes to win; coaching is enabling athletes to understand their potential as people. I want to develop close relationships with athletes, allowing me to recognize their strengths and weaknesses to assist them in developing as whole and complete persons.”
“Jon has an amazing potential to connect these athletes to an opportunity that can impact the lives of our athletes for years to come, both socially and professionally,” stated Beach Crew Alumni’s Director of Outreach, Brandin Grams. “I am happy to see Jon get right on the ball and dive into the Week-of-Welcome rush this week. On the behalf of the board, we are all very excited to see Jon with us this year and for the road ahead.”
Jon resides with his wife, Jackie, a former Beach Crew alum, in Bellflower, CA. Jon will be assisting Head Coach Robert Edwards throughout the year, specifically with the novice athletes.
