Week-of-Welcome 2012 is Here!

Beach Crew kicks off the 2012-2013 Academic Year at ASI’s annual Week-of-Welcome. New students have the opportunity to participate in many activities, learn more about the campus and even earn prizes as they are “welcomed” to California State University, Long Beach.

Week-of-Welcome is set for Tuesday through Friday, September 4-7 and will be taken to new heights with the creation of a theme park of sorts, including rides, snow-cone machines and delicious food.

“Week of Welcome is basically a week-long event where students can find resources to become better involved on campus, from organizations to personal resources,” said ASI Chief Programming Officer Irving Barcenas. “It is also a safe way to have fun.”

The Info-Rama Resource Fair will kick things off on Tuesday from 11 AM-2 PM at the Beach Circle, located near the track and College of Business Administration (CBA) building. Focusing on the several ways to get involved and learn about ASI, students will also have the opportunity to win prizes and purchase lunch from three food trucks.

On Wednesday and Thursday, the annual Student Organization Fair will take place in the Central Quad from 11 AM-2 PM. There, students can visit nearly 300 student clubs and organizations.

“There will be a lot of interactive games and opportunities for students just looking to have a good time,” Barcenas said.

Barcenas said the event will be more organized than in the past.

“Students will know everywhere they are going,” he said. ‘There will be multiple entrances and more organization.”

Week of Welcome wraps up with Smorgasport, CSULB’s first party of the new semester, from 8 PM to midnight on Friday, Sept. 7 at the University Student Union.

More than 3,000 students are expected to attend and will enjoy music, free food, billiards, bowling, inflatable attractions, interactive games and the opportunity to connect with new classmates.

Some of the interactives scheduled include a rock-climbing wall, five-way bungee, human whirl, painless paintball and two-way joust.

Beach Crew is expected to steal the spotlight once again by running the RowPro simulator and the 2012 Smorgasport 500m Regatta.

The team will host its annual open house at the Pete Archer Rowing Center, 5750 Boathouse Lane, Long Beach, on Saturday, September 8, from 4:00-7:00pm. Novice rowers begin Monday, September 10, 5:30am.
