The Beach Takes Lockyer Title

Written by JJ Fiddler – Long Beach Gazettes

Long Beach State Crew’s Novice 8+ took home the gold medals at the annual Bill Lockyer Christmas Regatta at the historic Marine Stadium on Sunday. The Beach finished the 850-meter sprint at 2:41.0, five seconds ahead of open water followed by the University of San Diego, Chapman University, Arizona State, and Loyola Marymount. Bill Lockyer was LBSU’s first rowing coach from 1957-1970. His legacy at Long Beach State and in the local rowing community lives on in this annual event.

Head Coach Rob Edwards and his assistant Jeffrey Vreeland are gearing the men up for a good spring season starting Saturday, March 5, when LBSU hosts the annual SoCal Opening Day Regatta in Marine Stadium. LBSU Crew is in its final week of the fall season training when they will take a two week break for the winter holidays and return on January 3 for double day training until the spring semester begins.
