Beach Crew ended their fall season taking home several medals at the Bill Lockyer Christmas Regatta. Other universities in attendance were the University of San Diego (USD), California Maritime Academy (CMA), UC Irvine (UCI), Chapman University (CU), and Loyola Marymount (LMU).
Coach O’Donnell’s novice men took all medals, gold, silver and a bronze, in the Men’s Novice Open 4+ event against Cal Maritime, Univ. San Diego, and Chapman University. In the 8+’s they took the silver behind Univ. San Diego A-boat and ahead of Cal Maritime, Chapman Univ., and the USD-B boat. Coach Edwards’ varsity men took home the bronze in the Men’s Open 8+ behind Loyola Marymount, USD A-boat, and ahead of Chapman Univ., Cal Maritime, and the USD B-boat. Coach Draper’s novice women took on an amazing fight in the Women’s Novice Open 8+ with three boats from Univ. San Diego and the ZLAC open crew, managing to take the silver home. Coach Harris’ varsity women took home the bronze in the Women’s Open 4+ behind the UC Irvine boats and ahead of the USD boats. Several groups of pairs (2-) were sent out in the Women’s Open Pair events with the top boat taking silver behind Univ. San Diego. and ahead of UC Irvine and Cal Maritime.
Beach Crew would like to thank the many parents and friends that cheered on the 49’ers with all that Beach Pride along the paths of Marine Stadium. We especially want to give a shout out to the Buda family for their generous hospitality for the entire team. It’s time that The Beach makes its mark at these events.
The team’s last day on the water was Friday, December 11, as they prepare for final exams and head home for the holidays. Winter workouts begin Monday, January 4, that will consist of water time in the morning and a second workout on campus in the newly renovated PE-88 facility.
