The Beach Takes Home the Gold at WIRA

Long Beach State Crew took home the gold medals for the Women's Lightweight (LW) 4+ and bronze medals for the Women's Lightweight (LW) 8+,
in the 2010 Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association's Regional Championships (WIRA). The LW 8+ grand final took place Saturday afternoon
in a race against Stanford University in the lead followed by Willamette. UC San Diego and Washington State trailed behind Long Beach State.
The Beach finished with 7:56. |

April Events

Beach Crew has been busy in April traveling up and down the western states.
NCRC - Vancouver, WA
The beginning of the month found the team ending their Spring Break double-day training on campus and at the Pete Archer Rowing Center.
April 2 found the team traveling from Long Beach to Vancouver Lake, WA, to compete in the Northwest Collegiate Rowing Invitational (NCRC).
Unfortunately, due to wind conditions, the regatta was cancelled. But the team didn't go home without any time on the water. The host,
Lewis & Clark College, moved the venue to their waters along the Willamette River in Portland, OR.
The team took several spots taking first in the Men's Varsity 4+, second in the Men's Varsity 8+, second in the Women's Varsity 8+, and
third in the Women's Novice 8+. Other universities in attendance this weekend were Humboldt State, California Maritime, Chapman University,
Portland State, Puget Sound University, Pacific Lutheran University, Western Washington, and Seattle Pacific. |

Beach Crew Makes Row2k's "Photo of the Day"

Beach Crew made Row2k.com's "Photo of the Day" highlight on April 23. The photo featured the famous "Drama Fo Ya Mama" Vespoli 4+, currently being rowed by the Women's Varsity 4+. The photo was taken by John King, a Beach Crew Dad of the Men's Novice team, on April 19, during the regatta in Newport Harbor with UC Santa Barbara, UC Irvine, and Chapman University.

With the Spring 2010 season already underway, many of us look back at the first stroke we took on the water and ponder where we stand up to the rest of the crews we face, let alone competing with our own peers to get seated in the boat. It was a time that left us confused, frustrated, and asking the question, "Why am I doing this?" We asked athletes to look back at that. It's all a blur to them now, but there are still some fond memories of the first day on the water... |

Getting Ready for Spring Racing

About to kick off the spring semester, the athletes paid their annual respects to "The Queen", the RMS Queen Mary I, that is permanently docked in the Downtown Long Beach Shroreline Village District. This is usually the only time the crews get the real experience of rowing in open ocean waters.
Beach Crew has a scrimmage with UC Irvine and Orange Coast on Satuday, February 27. Opening Weekend is scheduled Saturday, March 6, and will be hosted by UC San Diego in Mission Bay this year. Long Beach State is scheduled to host this event next season where collegiate teams will go head-to-head down Marine Stadium. |

from time to time and see strange things pop up. We've celebrated a
year online and have identified what we need to continue serving our
fans in an efficient and effective manner. We thank everyone for their

Beach Crew's First Team - 1958

search continues with our cooperative efforts of the Beach Crew
Alumni Association to hunt down the iron men who once rowed in
wooden shells. Over the course of the fall season the team received two
contacts, James Loomis and Lyle Miller, from the first team in 1958. |
